Front Tooth Trauma: What to Do—and How We Make Sure You Smile Again

When a front tooth is injured, it’s more than just a dental problem—it’s an emotional one. Whether it’s from a fall, a sports injury, or an accident, trauma to a front tooth affects your smile, your confidence, and your daily life. At our office in Schertz, we treat anything involving your front teeth and your smile as an emergency. If it happens, we’re here for you—no waiting, no call-backs—just fast, compassionate care.

What to Do If a Front Tooth Is Knocked Out or Injured

Timing matters. In the first hour after trauma, what you do can be the difference between saving or losing a tooth.

If a tooth is knocked out (completely out of the socket):

  • Do NOT rinse it in water – Water can damage the delicate root surface.
  • Use milk or your own saliva – Gently rinse off any dirt with milk or saliva.
  • Put it back in right away – If possible, gently place the clean tooth back into the socket within seconds to minutes. Hold it in place by biting on a cloth.
  • If you can’t reinsert it, keep it moist – Place it in a small container of milk, or tuck it between your cheek and gums to keep the root from drying out.
  • See a dentist immediately – Ideally, within 30–60 minutes. Every minute counts.

If a tooth is displaced (still in the mouth but moved):

  • Don’t try to reposition it forcefully.
  • Call our office immediately—we’ll make room to see you the same day.
  • In the meantime, avoid biting or chewing on it.

If there is bleeding:

  • Apply firm pressure with a clean gauze or cloth.
  • If a lip or gum is cut, use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • Call us—we can evaluate whether stitches or other treatment is needed.

What We’ll Do at Your Emergency Visit

When you arrive at our office, here’s what we’ll do immediately:

  • Take X-rays to check the position of the tooth and look for fractures.
  • Reposition or stabilize the tooth if it’s been knocked loose, displaced, or knocked out and reinserted.
  • Splint the tooth to surrounding teeth using a small wire or flexible material to hold it in place.
  • Start antibiotics or other medications if needed to prevent infection.

A Real Patient Story: Back to Smiling in Schertz

A teenage patient from Schertz came in after falling on the basketball court and knocking out his front tooth. His mom acted fast—she found the tooth, rinsed it in milk, and brought it with them. We were able to reinsert and stabilize the tooth within the hour.

Over the following months, we carefully monitored healing, and though a root canal was later needed, the tooth remained stable and natural-looking. His smile—and his confidence—were fully restored. At his last visit, he told us:

“I was scared at first, but I’m so glad we came here. You saved my tooth.”
